Dr. Mohammed K. Qaisi is a highly distinguished dual-degree oral and maxillofacial surgeon and head & neck surgeon based in Chicago. As the founder of the Oral Cancer Institute, Dr. Qaisi is widely respected for his expertise in the management of oral and head & neck cancers, as well as for his groundbreaking work in maxillofacial reconstructive surgery—most notably, the innovative “Fibula Jaw in a Day” procedure. Early Life and Education

Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Dr. Qaisi pursued his dental education at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine before earning his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport. He completed his residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at LSU Health Sciences Center and further specialized through a two-year fellowship in Head & Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center.

Board-certified by the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Qaisi is a dedicated educator. He has held academic roles at institutions including the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, and Midwestern University. He is currently an adjunct professor of oral & maxillofacial surgery and has served as the residency program director at Cook County Health.

His teaching reaches across multiple disciplines—training dental and medical students, general practice residents, ENT residents, plastic surgery trainees, and OMFS residents-demonstrating his holistic approach to surgical education.

Community Service

Dr. Qaisi and his team play an active role in the community by providing facial trauma care at both Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and Advocate Christ Medical Center-offering critical support to patients during emergencies.

He also organizes the Annual Oral Cancer Symposium, fostering awareness among both healthcare providers and the public. In addition, he leads a monthly study club for dental and medical professionals, creating a collaborative space to discuss clinical advances and enhance interdisciplinary knowledge.

Research and Innovation

A hallmark of Dr. Qaisi’s career is his role in developing and popularizing the Fibula Jaw in a Day technique. This groundbreaking procedure enables patients with jaw tumors to undergo resection, fibular reconstruction, and dental rehabilitation-all in a single day, compared to the traditional 12-month timeline. His team was only the second in the U.S. to perform and publish on this technique.

Beyond this innovation, Dr. Qaisi has contributed significantly to academic literature with numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in oral oncology and reconstructive surgery.

Leadership and Professional Involvement

A recognized leader in his field, Dr. Qaisi serves on multiple national and state committees. He is the current Chair of the Education Committee of the Chicago Dental Society (CDS) and sits on the Head & Neck Oncologic and Reconstructive Surgery Committee of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS). He has also served as President of both the Chicago Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (CSOMS) and the Illinois Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (ISOMS).
